The Life and Times of Deandre "GetRight" Wallace
Deandre Wallace, more commonly known by his street name GetRight or his childhood nickname Man Man, was a figure whose life and death became deeply intertwined with the violent narrative of Chicago's drill scene. Born on August 31, 1995, in Chicago, Illinois, Deandre was raised primarily by his grandmother, Miss Cookie, who affectionately called him Man Man. Growing up, he was described as a quiet child, close to his sister, who enjoyed simple pleasures like riding bikes and helping his grandmother around the house.
Around 2009, as a young teenager, Man Man began associating with other youths in his neighborhood, including individuals known as K.I., Lil P, and Modell. At this time, the prominent gang faction in their area was Jaro City, an expansive group that many local kids claimed affiliation with. Another, more insular and notoriously violent set nearby was EBT, known for its hitters like Kray Kray, Baby Greg, and Wee Wee. Initially, Man Man and his friends navigated this landscape where gang lines were forming and solidifying.
Deandre earned the moniker "GetRight" from friends who teased him, comparing him to the mute, often clumsy character played by Bokeem Woodbine in the 1999 film Life. Despite reportedly disliking the nickname, it stuck with him throughout his life, eventually morphing into "Cant Get Right" or "Get Right Witchya" as his reputation for street activity grew.
The killing of Tooka, another local youth, marked a turning point. Following Tooka's death, many younger members, including Man Man, K.I., Lil P, Modell, and FBG Butta, began strongly claiming the set STL (also known as Tookaville), which was closely allied with EBT. STL itself had roots connected to EBT through its founder, C Ball, who was K.I.'s uncle and an active EBT member. Man Man and his core group (K.I., Lil P, Modell) became inseparable, engaging in activities like breaking into houses and stealing cars. They often congregated at the home of G Dayski (STL), which served as a hangout spot and relative safe haven where they smoked, played video games, and sometimes dealt drugs.
The escalating violence of the Chicago streets soon claimed those close to Man Man. In April 2012, EBT member Doc, Modell's cousin, was killed by rivals from O-Block. Just months later, on October 13, 2012, Man Man's close friend Modell was shot and killed, allegedly by O-Block member King Von. Another devastating blow came in April 2014 when his friend K.I. was murdered, also allegedly by King Von. These losses reportedly fueled Man Man's desire for retaliation and deepened his involvement in gang conflicts. He became known for "sliding" – carrying out acts of violence against rivals – often alongside members like Wooski, G.I. Joe (K.I.'s brother), TB, and others associated with Tyquan World (TW), another allied set.
Man Man's profile rose significantly in 2017. The killing of O-Block's T. Roy in February 2017 was attributed by many to STL/TW members. Surveillance footage from the incident appears to show Man Man leading the approach into the store where T. Roy was killed. His appearances alongside rising rapper FBG Duck in ZackTV interviews further increased his visibility. In a May 2017 interview, he flashed firearms and acted as Duck's security, solidifying his image as muscle but also making him a more prominent target. A later interview in September 2017 showed a more somber Man Man, following the deaths of more friends, including FBG Brick, Poppie, and TB within a short period.
Amidst the turmoil, Man Man maintained a serious relationship with his girlfriend, DD, starting around 2016. She was a stabilizing influence, helping him secure a legitimate job, which he seemed proud of. Sometime before his death, Man Man was shot but survived, recovering over several months while living with DD.
However, new conflicts were brewing. 051 Melly, a member of the rival Young Money faction known for his own violent reputation, began spending time in STL/Jaro City territory and grew close to FBG Duck. Tension reportedly developed between Melly and Man Man. Additionally, friction existed with MuBu Krump from Dro City, who was close to Melly. Following an argument between Krump and Ambrii (a Jaro City member close to Man Man and DD's cousin) at a house party on May 25, 2018, both Krump and Melly were shot. Krump died at the scene, while Melly survived. Based on insider accounts, that Man Man and TW members were responsible for this shooting in retaliation for the argument and possibly a prior incident where Man Man was jumped by Dro City members.
Just 11 days later, on June 15, 2018, the cycle of violence claimed Man Man. While outside a restaurant with other STL members, shooters opened fire. Man Man was struck multiple times and killed. An innocent bystander, 43-year-old Troy O. Hampton, who cleaned outside the restaurant for extra money, was also tragically killed in the crossfire. Man Man was 22 years old.
His funeral, held on June 29, 2018, drew members from STL, Jaro City, EBT, and Tyquan World. Notably, 051 Melly did not attend. In the aftermath, rivals like King Von, Memo600, and JusBlow600 publicly disrespected Man Man on social media. His sister's online posts expressed deep grief and hinted at betrayal, fueling speculation within the community that Melly, despite his recent association with FBG Duck, may have played a role in setting up GetRight's death.
Deandre "GetRight" Wallace's story is a stark illustration of the Chicago drill environment – characterized by fierce loyalty, devastating loss, cycles of retaliation, and lives cut tragically short. From a quiet child nicknamed Man Man to a feared figure known as Cant Get Right, his journey reflected the harsh realities faced by many young men in his community.
