The Jacka

The Jacka, born Dominic Newton in August, 1977, was an American rapper from Pittsburg, California. He started his rapping career with the group Mob Figaz whom released their first album, C-bo’s Mob Figaz, in 1999. The Jacka converted to Islam at an early age and changed his legal name to Shaheed Akbar. The Jacka got his rap name while he was serving a 1 year prison stint for carjacking. The Jacka had his own label known as The Artist Records. On February 2, 2015, was shot to death by an unknown assailant.

The Jacka’s Carrer

The Jacka started his career with Pittsburg based group Mob Figaz. The group released their first album titled C-bo’s Mob Figaz in 1999. The album was a hit on the Billboard Hip Hop chart and debuted at #63, it sold over 160,000 units.

The Jacka released his first solo album titled Jacka of the Mob Figaz in 2001; it sold over 30,000 units. Though the numbers were low, all the albums were sold by The Jacka himself. The Jacka would later go on to release his second solo album, The Jack Artist, in 2005 which failed to make the Billboard Charts. The Jacka went on to release numerous other solo albums as well as albums with his group Mob Figaz.

The Jacka’s Death

On February 2, 2015, The Jacka was shot and killed in East Oakland, California. According to Reggie Grant, The Jacka’s Godbrother, The Jacka was sitting in a van along with 7 or 8 other individuals making music, when a gunman started shooting. The Jacka was hit in the head, bystanders tried to stop the bleeding but The Jacka ended up dying as a result of his injuries. The Jacka’s death was the 11th killing in the city for the year 2015.
