600 Cartel is a music label founded by Chicago rapper 600 Breezy, who is also a documented member of the 600 set—a faction of the Black Disciples street gang. The label draws its name from this gang set, but its creation sparked controversy within the 600 community. While the label aimed to elevate affiliated artists and capitalize on Breezy’s growing fame, not all members of the 600 set supported the endeavor.
Controversy and Criticism
The use of the "600" name for a commercial record label caused tension among certain gang members. Many within the 600 set believe the gang’s name and reputation should not be used for personal profit unless everyone involved is directly affiliated with the gang. Critics argue that branding the name for entertainment could dilute or misrepresent the gang's identity.
One of the most vocal critics was Booka600, a fellow rapper and member of the 600 set. Booka took to social media to voice his disapproval of the label, tweeting:
- “I Don’t Know No 600Cartel On LA, that’s some FU sh*t.”*
By referencing LA Capone—another deceased and respected member of 600—Booka emphasized that real 600 members wouldn’t approve of the name being used without full endorsement from the gang.
Despite the criticism, 600 Breezy and 600 Cartel have continued their musical pursuits and secured a deal with Empire Records, a label known for distributing music for many independent and street-oriented artists.
