Blue Fin Black Disciples

The Blue Fin Black Disciples, also recognized as the Blue Fin Five Disciples, emerged as a renegade faction of the Black Disciple Nation gang. The origins of this group remain somewhat obscure, with limited documentation available. Their inception dates back to around the year 2000, spearheaded by Marvel Thomson, known as King Vel, who was then the second-in-command of the Black Disciples.

Foundation and Ideological Shift

In a bold move around 2000, Marvel Thomson orchestrated the secession of several Black Disciple sets from their traditional affiliation with the Black Disciple Nation, redirecting alliances towards the People Nation. This was a significant shift as the Black Disciples had long been aligned with the Folk Nation. The moniker “Blue Fin Five Disciples” reflects their new allegiance, symbolized by the People Nation’s five-pointed star, contrasting with the Folk Nation’s six-pointed star. Additionally, King Vel integrated Islamic tenets into their beliefs, akin to other gangs within the People Nation, notably the Black P. Stone Nation.

Speculations and Repercussions

The rationale behind King Vel’s departure from the Black Disciples is speculative, with suggestions pointing to strained relations with other Folk Nation gangs, particularly the Gangster Disciples. Upon aligning with the People Nation, the Blue Fins adhered to its bylaws, forging robust relationships with the Black P Stones and the Mickey Cobras. Their primary adversaries became the Gangster Disciples and the remaining Black Disciples.

Some conjecture that the formation of the Blue Fins influenced Jerome "Shorty" Freeman’s decision to step down as leader of the Black Disciples. However, sources close to law enforcement argue that his resignation in April 2000 was an attempt to expedite his release from prison.

Current Status

Despite the passage of time, the Blue Fin Black Disciples remain active. Nonetheless, reports suggest that certain factions within the Blue Fins have reconciled with the Black Disciple Nation, indicating a dynamic and evolving gang landscape in Chicago.
