Flip (Gang Slang Meaning)

Flip (Flipping) refers to the colloquial term commonly used among gang members, particularly in Chicago, to signify the act of switching allegiances between gangs. For example, if a person was once affiliated with the Black Disciples gang but is now a member of the Gangster Disciples, it might be said that they have flipped to GD. This term can apply to individuals flipping gangs, gang sets changing their affiliations, or even entire gangs switching their national alliances.

Flipping can occur either voluntarily or under duress. For instance, if a gang enters into conflict with another and faces defeat, rather than surrendering their territory, they might choose to flip allegiance to the rival gang. On an individual level, those who flip gangs are often viewed with disdain, as it involves abandoning former comrades to forge new relationships with others. This can lead to questions about their loyalty, especially if the flip lacks a compelling justification.

Flip Examples

  • Tyrone's not a BD anymore, he flipped to GD.
  • That block's not Vice Lords any more, they flipped to Black P Stones.
  • Damn what happened? I heard the Gangster Disciples left the Folks Nation and flipped to People Nation.
