Johnny Boy Da Prince was born Johnny Taylor in Chicago, Illinois, and was an emerging rapper whose life was tragically cut short before he could achieve his dreams of superstardom. His music was a significant part of the drill movement, which is often criticized for its portrayal of the gang life that affects Chicago's streets. Despite the controversy, Johnny Boy's videos on YouTube were well-received by both fans and critics alike.
Growing up amidst the challenges of Chicago's harsh environment, Johnny Boy had several run-ins with the law, dating back to 2008. He faced multiple arrests, primarily for drug possession and dealing. After serving prison time, Johnny was introduced to his manager, Dillard Florence, who advised him to focus on music instead of the streets. He heeded this advice, recording over 150 songs and nearing a potential deal with Atlantic Records. According to Andrew Fetcher, an assistant at the label, they were in the process of arranging a meeting with Johnny Boy Da Prince, believing he had the potential for a successful career in music.
Death
On Wednesday, January 9, 2013, just before midnight, Johnny was tragically shot multiple times on the 100 block of South Springfield Avenue by unidentified assailants. He was rushed to the hospital where his manager, Florence, was initially told that he would be fine. However, the surgical team later revealed that Johnny had succumbed to his injuries at the age of 23. His manager mentioned that Johnny had recently begun speaking out against the violence that he grew up witnessing in Chicago. One of his latest songs, "Just Like You," addressed the senseless murders occurring in the city. His death was believed to be a case of mistaken identity. Johnny left behind a four-year-old son.
