The Jacka

The Jacka, born Dominic Newton in August 1977, was a prominent American rapper from Pittsburg, California. His career commenced with the group Mob Figaz, who released their debut album, C-bo’s Mob Figaz, in 1999. Embracing Islam at an early age, he changed his name to Shaheed Akbar. The moniker 'The Jacka' was adopted during a year-long prison sentence for carjacking. He later established his own record label, The Artist Records. On February 2, 2015, his life was tragically cut short when he was fatally shot by an unknown assailant.

The Jacka’s Career

The Jacka began his career with the Pittsburg-based group Mob Figaz. Their initial album, C-bo’s Mob Figaz, dropped in 1999 and climbed to #63 on the Billboard Hip Hop chart, selling over 160,000 copies. The Jacka ventured into solo projects with his album Jacka of the Mob Figaz in 2001, achieving sales of over 30,000 units independently. In 2005, he released his second album, The Jack Artist, which, despite not charting, solidified his presence in the rap scene. Over the years, The Jacka released numerous solo and group albums, contributing significantly to the Bay Area rap landscape.

The Jacka’s Death

On February 2, 2015, The Jacka was fatally shot in East Oakland, California. According to his godbrother, Reggie Grant, he was inside a van with several others working on music when the attack occurred. He was struck in the head, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. His death marked the 11th homicide in Oakland for the year 2015.
